Making dolls for fairy tale theater
At the Little Blue Schoolhouse, children take part in a variety of activities. They learn not only during structured class time, but also through hands-on activities. It's not always the product that's important, but the process. During outdoor play, children develop gross-motor skills and physical strength through running and playing. There are both free-play times and teacher-directed tasks, such as field days. While indoors, children spend a part of their day in preschool, learning things such as phonics, number concepts, opposites, telling time, sequencing, etc. In addition, during free play, children can move among a number of learning centers, including science, dramatic play, kitchen, blocks, and books.
The Little Blue Schoolhouse also recognizes the growing importance of communication in today's world. In addition to fostering children's rapidly-expanding English language skills, we also teach basic Spanish and American Sign Language. However, communication is not limited to language, and for that reason the LBS has 3 computers with high-speed internet connections on which teachers can give lessons. Older children are given individual topics to explore and lessons to follow. The LBS also has a digital projector available for teachers, and is looking into purchasing laptop computers in order to expand access.
